About R-Zero

R-Zero is the first biosafety technology company dedicated to making the indoor spaces we share safer, healthier and more productive. Founded to meet a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rethink how society approaches health in the built environment, we develop the most effective and innovative technologies to create safer, healthier buildings for all. Combining space utilization sensor technology, AI, ML and IoT connected hardware, R-Zero’s intelligent biosafety platform provides first-of-its-kind visibility, automation and smart risk reduction in the indoor environments where humans spend 90% of their time. Today, R-Zero is emerging as a world-leader in delivering category-defining technology to deliver healthier indoor spaces for all.

We are a fast-growing startup, backed by the world-leading experts at Mayo Clinic and thought-leaders across health, hospitality, sports, commercial real estate and impact sectors – including those who have propelled some of the most transformative tech and innovation in history. DBL Partners, World Innovation Lab (WiL), SOSV, and John Doerr have all invested in our vision for a future that prioritizes health in the built environment.

As we grow our team, we’re looking for candidates who aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo, and are motivated to usher in a better future via better buildings.

R-Zero is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our Engineering team. As a member of this team, you will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities. You’re ready for this opportunity if you have experience with embedded design, analog/mixed signal design, or RF. The systems we work with could have microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGAs from simple to large, displays, audio, inertial sensors, haptic interfaces, camera sensors, and high speed I/O. You should be comfortable designing mixed high-speed digital circuit boards, be experienced with troubleshooting at the board and system level, and be familiar with agile development processes. You should also have enough firmware skills to successfully bring boards up and get them to a proof-of-concept level of readiness, the ability to work with a team of researchers with tolerance for a high degree of ambiguity, and have experience designing and implementing high reliability and robust systems.

This role needs to report weekly to R-Zero offices in San Francisco and San Jose CA. Regular travel to customer locations and our HQ in Salt Lake City UT is required as well. Our San Francisco office is very close to the Caltrain and public transportation and includes a variety of testing equipment and work stations. Our San Jose office features a full PCBA manufacturing facility, CNC machines, 3d printers, and basically everything you need to prototype and build products. Transportation costs to the offices are reimbursed.

What You’ll Do:

  • Take high level requirements and turn them into detailed specifications
  • Locate devices that satisfy these requirements. For example: to lift 10 kg, specify a complete motor drive system
  • Understand sensors used for robotics and be able to specify sensor requirements, test and evaluate their performance
  • Write programs and scripts to test and integrate new hardware into our systems
  • Incubating new technologies into research prototypes
  • Develop PCBA from concept all the way through large scale mass production

What We’re Looking For:

  • 7-10+ years experience designing and shipping electronic products. Successful, large scale product deployments are looked at more closely than years of experience.
  • Position is onsite in Milpitas, California
  • Familiarity with robotics systems
  • Familiarity with electrical hardware prototyping, including Arduino, Raspberry Pi, soldering, etc.
  • Familiarity with debugging electronics using tools such as oscilloscope, multimeter, power supply, etc.
  • Skilled with sourcing components, validating alternate suppliers, etc
  • Demonstrates strong aptitude for creative problem solving
  • Experience designing PCBs to meet UL requirements
  • Experience managing EMI, specifically related to high voltage products.
  • Experience with connected device / Internet of Things (IoT) products
  • Proficient with Altium or similar
  • Experience creating initial system bring-up code or debug and test code in C/C++.
  • Experience programming a real-time operating system (RTOS), especially using FreeRTOS.
  • Experience with LoRa and LTE are a plus.
  • Nice to have: background designing or testing sensors such as lidars, 3D cameras and vision systems.
  • May require up to 25% domestic travel.
