About The Role 

Path is hiring an In House Counsel as our first legal hire, overseeing outside counsel and acting as a trusted guide in legal discussions big and small. We are a fast growing start-up, and expect our In House Counsel to understand that risk spotting and “you can’t do that because” doesn’t help us navigate risk and push forward the business at the pace we want to move. The ability to help Path adeptly navigate through risk will be essential. This person will develop and implement a contract management system and contract review process, identify when outside counsel is or isn’t needed and manage all outside counsel requests. More importantly, they will proactively know or find the answer to needs across corporate governance, commercial, and employment law, and ensure the business is set up for scale.

This role will report directly to the COO until we hire General Counsel and interface regularly across the executive team.

You Will 

  • Advise the executive leadership team on all legal matters related to the company’s operations and strategic initiatives
  • Review and negotiate various agreements, including vendor contracts, partnership agreements, and licensing agreements
  • Develop and implement corporate governance policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including commercial and employment laws
  • Manage outside counsel relationships and budgets
  • Manage and drive forward initiatives with outside counsel
  • Ensure we have an efficient and effective contract management and review process in place
  • Collaborate across teams as a business partner, providing prompt, thoughtful, and structured legal advice

What We’re Looking For 

  • JD degree from an accredited law school
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in roles of increasing responsibility
  • Experience with a scaling start-up environment
  • Experience with managing outside counsel and running a commercial team
  • Experience with employment law as it relates to in-company HR issues
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Highly organized, with an ability to create and maintain systems that ensure accuracy
