Engineering at Swiftly
Engineering at Swiftly is not only about writing code – we believe in creating empowered product teams that work together to conceptualize new features and bring them to life. Each team aims to strike a balance between delivering incremental improvements, creating prototypes to test new ideas and mitigate risks, and building scalable software using industry best practices. We’re guided by a mission to positively impact transit riders, and we embrace humility and intentionality in how we make technical decisions so that we best meet our customers’ needs.
The Role
We are looking for an Android Engineer who will contribute significantly to Swiftly’s connected transit platform. You will join a small, agile team working to extend our platform into the mobile realm. Your initial focus will be designing, developing, and implementing product features, architecture, and testing infrastructure to enhance our Onboard App experience.
Onboard App is an intuitive Android application for onboard tablets providing real-time feedback directly to operators and vehicle analytics to Swiftly’s transit data platform. It helps improve on time performance through turn-by-turn navigation, notification of service adjustments like detours or holds, and communication with dispatch. Running across buses, trains, and ferries, it boosts operator morale and performance by removing the guesswork from daily workflows, ultimately improving passenger satisfaction. As you grow you will have the opportunity to shape not only the evolution of Onboard App but Swiftly’s overall mobile strategy.
We encourage you to apply if the above is exciting to you and if you meet half or more of the below requirements. We’re also looking for candidates with a variety of experience levels for our team so welcome your application if your experience exceeds this list. Above all else, we value candidates who angle toward growth, leveraging a positive attitude and the aptitude to relentlessly seek and solve problems to deliver impact. We know the tech landscape is ever-changing and strongly support individual growth. If this is exciting to you, then we’d love to talk!

What you’ll do

    • Design, build, deliver, maintain, and extend features and functionality that solve real customer problems
    • Contribute technically to Swiftly’s mobile applications, optionally to backend and API systems if able
    • Partner with product management, design, and engineers to discover the right solution to customer problems. This may include building quick prototypes to assess the right technical design and to accurately estimate the level of effort
    • Deliver functionality that helps your team make progress on our product vision, especially by anticipating dependencies, breaking down work into smaller batches, and demonstrating incremental work in progress
    • Seek feedback on system designs by identifying technical tradeoffs, presenting proposed solutions in a clear way, and documenting decisions
    • Leverage modern software engineering principles and deliver robust, maintainable, extensible code, including by using and contributing to Swiftly’s Design System
    • Elevate those on your team and on other teams through mentoring, code reviews, pairing, and ultimately by embodying and proliferating excellent teamwork
    • Take ownership of your product and code, and reflect on how you and your team can improve by engaging in team retrospectives and embracing a continuous improvement mindset

What will set you up for success

    • You are excited to be part of a mission-driven company. Regardless of your why, it is important that you care about the work we do
    • You have 3+ years software engineering experience building Android applications in Kotlin
    • Strong experience in modern Android paradigms and toolkits including use of Kotlin coroutines and Jetpack Compose
    • A passion for quality, reliability, and stability, demonstrated through performance monitoring, observability, and unit and integration testing
    • Bonus if you have additional mobile (iOS) or full stack development experience
    • Bonus if you have experience developing map-based experiences or applications with real time communication (VoIP, WebRTC, Websockets)
    • You love applying technology to solve real problems for customers and users
    • You embrace a mindset of continuous learning – helping both yourself and those around you adapt as technology constantly evolves
    • You are a dynamic team player and seek to make valuable contributions wherever it is most needed at any given time to support your team’s goals
    • You’re open to receiving feedback (a core Swiftly value!), approach technical debates with humility, and participate in blameless postmortems when things go wrong
