These positions are designated as being part of OPEIU (Office Professional Employees International Union, Local 1010), the union that we voluntarily recognized in fall 2021. We are currently still in negotiations for our first CBA (collective bargaining agreement). Once that is signed, there will be union dues or fees associated with these positions. The amount of the dues or fees will be set by the union, and we do not yet know what that amount will be.

About the Role:

This job listing covers two levels on Code for America’s career ladder:

  • Software Engineer (Level 3), expected 1-3 years of professional experience.
  • Senior Software Engineer (Level 4), expected 4-6 years of professional experience.

Code for America’s software engineers are involved in all stages of our products’ lifecycle: product prototyping, developing features in response to user feedback, and operating technical systems at scale. We practice agile, iterative development, working closely with product managers, designers, researchers, and users.

Our current delivery projects include:

  • Safety Net Innovation Lab: unlocking $30B in public benefits across the country.
  • GetCalFresh: increasing access to food stamps in California.
  • GetYourRefund: low-income tax filing through free, high-quality online help.
  • GetCTC: free simplified tax e-filing to claim crucial tax benefits.

You’ll be assigned to work full time on one of our active product teams, and may have the opportunity to rotate to other teams in the future.

We work with well-known and reliable technologies like Ruby on Rails, Java Spring, PostgreSQL, and AWS. This position is full-time, based in our office in San Francisco or remote within the United States. You will report to an Engineering Manager or Engineering Director.

Code for America is a remote-first organization with intentional gatherings. In 2023, we will require attendance at two all-staff gatherings in the Bay Area. On work days, we collaborate between 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Pacific Time. More information is available in our remote work policy for engineers.

In this position you will:

  • Develop new features that help users more easily navigate government services and receive a dignified experience.
  • Write automated tests and develop monitoring strategies to ensure a high level of service quality.
  • Implement minimal features to maximize learning, and then harden features to scale when we know they work.
  • Pair program with your teammates to design and deliver clean, reliable, and maintainable solutions to user problems. We keep communication high and the cost of change low.
  • Interact with and help users yourself to better understand their experiences.

About you: 

  • Software Engineer (Level 3): At least 1-2 years of experience delivering production-quality web applications.
  • Senior Software Engineer (Level 4): At least 4-5 years of experience delivering production-quality web applications.
  • Interested in the mission of making government services better for people who need them most.
  • Understanding of computer science and web fundamentals, from data structures to APIs.
  • Eager in collaborating with others, receiving mentorship, and teaching others.
  • Willing to participate in all aspects of software development. You plan, code, test, deploy, monitor, and fix bugs.
  • Can write understandable, testable, and maintainable code.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Bonus points if you:

  • Have personal experience with the social safety net, unemployment insurance, the criminal legal system,  or other mission-relevant government services.
  • Are familiar with and comfortable with pair programming and test driven development. While we don’t pair all the time, we find it helpful in most contexts.
  • Have experience with full-stack web frameworks like Ruby on Rails and Java Spring.
  • Have experience in front-end web technologies and/or design systems; specifically, creating clean, reusable, accessible, and performant front-end systems using HTML, CSS, and lightweight JavaScript.

    • Software Engineer (Level 3): $94,350 – $115,500
    • Senior Software Engineer (Level 4): $111,648 – $136,675
