This position is designated as being part of OPEIU (Office Professional Employees International Union, Local 1010), the union that we voluntarily recognized in fall 2021. We are currently still in negotiations for our first CBA (collective bargaining agreement). Once that is signed, there will be union dues or fees associated with this position. The amount of the dues or fees will be set by the union, and we do not yet know what that amount will be.

We are seeking one Senior Qualitative UX Researcher to join the Tax Benefits Team. As part of the Qualitative Research Team at Code for America, you will help transform how government services are delivered. Your work will demonstrate that design can create the conditions for generational, systemic change and help millions of people in need.

About the Role:

The Tax Benefits Program aims to connect people to flexible cash. Flexible cash—meaning money that individuals and families decide how to spend for themselves—is one of the best ways to empower people toward financial stability. Cash support helps people provide for their basic needs, find and keep living wage jobs, and handle emergencies as they arise. Through GetYourRefund and GetCTC, the Tax Benefits program has delivered more than $300M to low income tax filers in flexible cash benefits. The Senior Qualitative UX Researcher will report to a Qualitative Research Manager.

In this position you will:

Plan and conduct research:

  • Scope research to support team goals. Generate buy-in for research, find right-sized opportunities for qualitative research
  • Make meaning out of ambiguity in creative ways. Amidst uncertainty and competing priorities, develop a research plan to answer key questions, and define research insights to drive product and service outcomes
  • Conduct exploratory, generative, and evaluative qualitative research. Build research plans, recruit participants, conduct research using an appropriate mix of methods, analyze and synthesize the results
  • Extend qualitative findings through mixed methods approach. Where appropriate, work with quantitative researchers to strengthen a mixed methods approach to research
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional colleagues. Work with PMs, designers, data scientists, program staff, engineers, and other qualitative researchers to set research strategy, conduct research, and put insights into action

Develop insights to drive action:

  • Generate feedback and insights that drive product and team decisions. Work directly with end users and a cross-disciplinary team to determine the riskiest bets and highest impact choices to improve outcomes for end users
  • Determine which research findings to prioritize. When the team has learned a lot, help uncover which insights are key to make change on the team, and know how to take additional steps if your findings are inconclusive. Engage internal and external stakeholders throughout the research process to help the research findings turn into action.
  • Share, discuss, and publish insights and findings. Socialize findings with both internal teams and wider external audiences to drive action

Promote an equity-centered practice:

  • Contribute to an equity-centered approach to work. In work with directly impacted communities, contribute to our research practice grounded in trauma-informed methodology
  • Create opportunities for collaboration with community members and stakeholders. Invite into the research practice those impacted by our interventions
  • Collaborate with other Code for America researchers. Work together to improve team practices and processes, and support and mentor research colleagues as they deepen their practice

About you: 

  • At least 4 years of qualitative UX research experience;
  • Proven experience of practicing impactful qualitative user research in the context of service design, user experience, or equivalent. (This role does not require a background in professional academic research);
  • Experience working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team;
  • A passion for our mission of making government services better for people who need them;
  • We strongly encourage individuals impacted by the criminal justice system (individuals with criminal records, family members of individuals with criminal records, etc.) or who have participated in social safety net programs (SNAP, welfare, WIC, Medicaid, etc.) to apply.

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Experience conducting research in languages other than English, specifically in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese,  Vietnamese, or Somali;
  • Experience working with or adjacent to government, particularly in the realm of safety net programs and/or criminal legal systems;
  • Experience with community organizing.

The targets for this role are dependent on the market/geographic location. The targets for this role range from ($111,648 – $136,675)
