Timescale is building the world’s next great database company on top of industry-standard PostgreSQL and we need your help! We are hiring an engineering manager to build and manage one of the teams that are developing our first vertical solution, Promscale.
Promscale is the open source observability backend for metrics and traces powered by SQL and backed by TimescaleDB and PostgreSQL. It offers a single store and query language for all observability data. It is open source, horizontally scalable (petabyte-scale) and operationally mature. It integrates with popular open source observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry and Jaeger.

What you’ll do
As an engineering manager at Timescale, you will have the opportunity to manage top-notch engineers creating the next generation time series products. The Observability group is responsible for making it easy to ingest telemetry data from Prometheus and OpenTelemetry into Timescale as well as visualizing and acting on that data. Promscale is designed to offer a single long term store and unified query language (SQL) for all observability data. It allows you to visualize your data in existing open source tools like Grafana or Jaeger and unlock new insights through sophisticated querying capabilities thanks to its full SQL support and TimescaleDB’s advanced analytic functions.
Engineering managers at Timescale are responsible for the overall operation of the team. You will be working directly with the engineers on your team to ensure they have the ability to grow in their career and feel fulfilled in their work. You will also be working to define and iteratively improve team processes with high-quality, rapid iteration of product features in mind. You will be working directly with the product manager to ensure roadmap items are properly defined, groomed, estimated and delivered. You will work with engineering and product managers from other teams to ensure any dependencies are scheduled and met.
The Observability group is growing rapidly. You will be responsible for hiring engineers and building a high performing team.

You will manage the hiring process for your roles, creating the hiring and sourcing plan, building an interview panel, and ultimately making the final decision on hiring. Key qualities in the successful candidate
You are intimately familiar with everything it takes to develop, build, deploy and operate modern software. You have successfully hired engineers and built high-performing teams. The people on your previous teams love working with you and have no problem giving positive feedback. You have a strong track record of delivering high-quality software on a schedule. You are able to manage people with empathy and respect and have tough conversations in a professional way.
Though coding experience is not required for this role (and we don’t expect engineering managers to write or review code), you should have a good idea of how software is architected and be able to communicate effectively with engineers and other technical staff about technical issues related to your team and the software they are building. We value managers with a variety of backgrounds. What Happens Next?
We regularly review resumes and pick the most promising for a 30 minute initial conversation. Upon a successful first call, you will speak with the hiring manager for 60 minutes to get a better understanding of your background and how you will apply it to Timescale. If you and the hiring manager decide to continue the conversation, you will be scheduled with a panel of interviewers. The final decision will be made by the hiring manager.
