Quick take: Axios is a growth-stage startup dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format. We are hiring an Associate Producer to join the team of our flagship daily news podcast, Axios Today.

Why it matters: The Associate Producer will produce daily news segments for Axios Today, as well as contribute to longer-term projects for the show as needed. Supporting the show’s producers and the senior producer, this person will be involved in the entire production process, including pitching, research, recording, editing, and sound design.

Go deeper: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for Axios’ mission and have the following skills:

  • Minimum 2 years experience working in journalism, preferably with experience producing daily news and working with reporters in a fast-paced environment. This includes:
  • Pitching and developing story segments
  • Booking and pre-interviewing guests
      • Researching and writing interview prep for the host and guest hosts, including clear framing that establishes what the segment will accomplish
  • Recording interviews ensuring high quality sound
      • Using Descript and Pro Tools to edit raw tape into compelling segments, and occasionally crafting segments with more nuanced mixing and sound design
      • Preparing show descriptions for website and podcast platforms
      • Lending editorial feedback throughout the editorial process
      • Building relationships with reporters across the newsroom as well as guests outside of Axios
      • Participating in special projects as assigned, which could occasionally include field reporting and gathering scene tape
  • Knowledge and interest in a wide range of topics
  • Highest standards for journalistic integrity and ethics
  • Clear, professional communication skills
  • Extraordinary attention to detail
  • 1-4 years regular experience cutting audio using Pro Tools or another DAW in a professional environment.
  • Understanding of the podcast landscape and how to innovate
  • Excellent writing skills for audio
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects on deadline and work across geographically-dispersed teams
  • Willingness to take and quickly incorporate feedback
  • When it feels personally safe and comfortable to do so, a willingness to meet regularly in-person with members of the New York City or DC teams
